Types of Locks

There are various types of locks. The appropriate lock type is determined by the type of door, its material, and the opening direction. We will explain the different types of locks:

Standard Mortise Lock

Of all lock types, a mortise lock is the most common door lock. The mortise lock is often used on interior doors and is built into the door and frame. This type of lock secures the door at only one point, which is why it is not often used on exterior doors. If it is, it is usually combined with an additional auxiliary lock. Mortise locks are generally easy to replace. The locksmith will ensure that the correct measurements are maintained.

Mortise Lock with Latch and Deadbolt

If you can operate the mortise lock with a door handle, key, or knob, it is a day/night lock (mortise lock with latch and deadbolt). This type of mortise lock consists of two parts: a latch bolt and a deadbolt. The latch bolt ensures that when the door is closed, it remains securely shut. You can then open the door again with a door handle or a quarter turn of the key. The deadbolt is much sturdier and allows you to lock the door by turning the key one or two full rotations. This secures your living space from others. The advantage of a mortise lock with latch and deadbolt is that it offers convenience during the day and security at night. Sometimes, a mortise lock is combined with an additional auxiliary lock for increased security.

Multi-point Lock

Another type of day/night lock that is frequently used is the multi-point lock. Multi-point locks are increasingly being installed in modern new-builds. This lock is an extra secure version of a mortise lock. A multi-point lock has at least three locking points distributed along the length of the door. This type of lock allows you to secure the door at multiple points with a single action and a single key. When using a multi-point lock, additional locks are generally not necessary.

Rim Lock

The rim lock is mainly found in older houses in large cities. In new-builds, this type of lock is almost never seen anymore. The rim lock is mounted on the inside of the door or the door frame. This lock also consists of a latch bolt and a deadbolt, but the latch bolt is opened with a sliding lever instead of a door handle.

Pin Lock

The pin lock is a robust built-in lock, equipped with two hard metal pins. You lock the door with a special cross key.
