To begin with, it’s good to know that there are 2 types of burglars: opportunistic burglars and professional burglars. In many cases, it is the opportunistic burglars who commit most of the (attempted) burglaries. These burglars are often not or hardly prepared, so they opt for simple and quick opportunities. This group also includes sneak-in thieves. These are mainly active in the summer and take advantage of an open window or door, even while you are at home.

Professional burglars often have a well-prepared plan, are equipped with effective tools, and are often members of a larger organization. Warding off this group is difficult due to the heavy tools.

5 tips to secure your Amsterdam home against burglary:

Because prevention is always better than cure, we have listed a number of tips to protect your home against burglars:

1. Lock your door and close all windows

Check all windows and doors before you leave, even if it’s for 5 minutes. If a door is not locked, a burglar only needs a pass to enter your home within 30 seconds. So even for a walk with the dog, it is important that you close your windows and doors.

2. Preventive security

Secure your home preventively? You can do this to ward off burglars:

• Place an anti-burglary strip and security bolts on your door.
• Install an anti-burglary bar and security bolts on the inside of your window.
• Remove objects that can be seen as burglary tools (ladders, tools, etc.).
• Ensure good outdoor lighting.
• Use locks with the SKG quality mark.
• Do not hide a key outside your home.

3. Keep valuables out of sight

Keep your valuables out of sight. A burglar usually doesn’t go inside without a mission. Often they have already spotted a target and getting out with your property happens within seconds.

4. Burglar alarm and cameras

Invest in a good burglar alarm and cameras. These systems collect evidence and give a loud alarm if someone commits a (attempted) burglary. There are also systems that give a silent alarm and only warn the police.

• Make sure you have your alarm system installed by a recognized, Borg- or VEB-company.
• Make it visible that you have a security system, burglars prefer to avoid houses with an alarm system.
